GARY'S LIFE STORY

The story of Gary Myers and his now infamous Muzzy’s began back in 1982, when Gary was an 17-year-old "P" plater, and had just discovered what he hoped to be his dream car in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. His old everyday battler, an XA Coupe was soon on the market and once sold, Gary headed to Sydney to follow his dream of owning an American Muscle Car, in this case a 1966 Mustang Coupe, paying what was in those days the small fortune of $7000.

Once he'd checked it out, Gary bought the virtually stock Mustang which was in Gary's words, "Tatty black paint, seven and eight inch twelve-slotters, rolled back sun roof, auto, standard 302, all the terrible things they did in those days, the only consolation was a new black Trim". The new black Trim lasted 20 years and saw him thru several burnout wins.

After using it as an everyday driver for half a dozen years, the first steps were taken towards the car becoming what you see on this website and at all the shows Australia wide. The big, tall Fisher Blower, the wheel tubs, a new turret and better paint followed in quick succession, together with a growing reputation as the toughest Burnout weapon around. Over the years working as a Motor Mechanic in Wagga, Gary gained many of the skills it would take to build his now Prized Possession. Once qualified as a Mechanic, Gary attended the local Tafe to further his skills in Panel Beating and Spray Painting, all of which were instrumental in his success with the building of the Muzzy, and maintaining it to show standards.

The road to Burnout Champion of the World began with Gary's first win at Summernats 6 in 1993. Gary's competition on the day was Chris Christou who was on his way to being the first competitor to win the Burnout comp 3 times running. What he didn't bargain on was Gary's determination to win his first comp, after competing for 4 long years, without a win or a place. And so began Gary's road to fame.

Before heading to Summernats 7, Gary established himself as a mean Burnout competitor by winning every burnout comp he entered around NSW. There was no doubt about it; Gary had found his calling.

Gary headed to Summernats 7 hoping to, as he says, take home the crown. On the day, he proved he and his Muzzy were a force to be reckoned with, winning for the second year running. As he did following his win the previous year, Gary entered as many comps as possible, with his record of wins increasing at nearly every comp. Gary was in his element, driving his dream car and driving the fans wild.

In a reversal of fortune, Gary now found himself in the same position as his old rival, Chris Christou, on the way to being the first man to win 3 consecutive Burnout comps at Summernats. The phenomenon had begun; Gary was on the road to making history and the pressure was on.

With precision timing, Gary performed his Burnout for over 2 minutes, leaving the doughnut pad steaming, the crowd screaming and bowing, blowing both tyres and clinching his victory at Summernats 8. No one was more surprised than Gary to see Chris Christou pulling onto the pad. The showdown was on. This was Chris's chance to break Gary's winning streak, and take his Gary’s chance of winning 3 in a row. De ja vue.

Despite the best efforts of Chris and other competitors, Gary was crowned Burnout Champ of Summernats 8, and made history with a record that still stands to this day. This was followed by several more wins, not only at Summernats, but also at shows Australia wide.

Following this success, Gary decided to make some changes to the Muzzy; new flamed paint, convo's went on, slotters came off. The flames came from his love of Hot Rods and he figured the mags would make an impact. He didn't want the Muzzy to be thought of as "Old Hat", the Muzzy deserved better.

Summernats 13 couldn't have been a better place to show off his handywork. The crowd was blown away; people couldn't believe the changes to her, knowing that he was competing for Burnout Champion Of The World. The Muzzy had never looked better and the question was being asked: Is he really going to compete??

Compete he did.

The Muzzy run on song and Gary was officially the Burnout Champion of The World, confirming what many fans had believed for years, Gary Myers was the Burnout King.

The win didn't come without significant damage to his newly flamed bodywork. He ignored his usual 7000rpm, pushing her to eight. "The radiator exploded, blew the grill out, done mega damage. And I had to redo all the flames. I really wanted to take that one out though, the competition was very fierce and everyone wanted to win it".

After his victory at Summernats 13 (2000), Gary had reached the pinnacle of Performance Car Shows, leaving only Display Burnouts as a real option to show off the Muzzy. Although he would love to continue competing, the demand for his Display Burnouts is now so large, it just isn't practical. Although competing in burnout comps all the time wasn't practical, Gary found another way to feed his passion, trying his hand at something new and giving the Muzzy a run on the Salt lakes in Lake Gairdner in S.A. Much to his surprise, he achieved an Australian Land Speed Record.

Is there anything this guy can't do??

When Street Machine rang to tell Gary he'd been nominated for Street Machine of The Year, he was totally blown away. The thought had never crossed his mind that he could take it out. Apparently his fans, which voted, felt differently, voting Gary Street Machine of The Year for 2001/2002. When asked if he expected to win, Gary said "Not really, there were lots of tidy cars amongst it, and I thought my car might have not been up to scratch. Well, half a chance maybe. I have to thank the fans though, they're the ones that made it happen".

With the Muzzy now being used for Static shows and Driving events, Gary felt it was about time to update the old girl once again. This meant the Muzzy had to be gutted, finally getting rid of the original old black trim he'd had for the last 20 years. The end result was an awesome grey leather interior, beautiful billet work on the steering column and doors, and custom made seats that Gary says are one of a kind, as done by Claude Carofano of Claude's Trim Shop in Adelaide. When asked in 2001 if the new work meant he was retiring from doing his famous burnouts, Gary was quoted as saying, "I always wanted do up the interior and run buckets in the back. Without doing the undercarriage, it'll never be a full on show car; I love doing skids too much. But with the new trim, I want to keep it Mickey Mouse for all the shows, so it just means more work to keep her looking good, but I’ll never stop doing it. I'll always get out and do a skid.

When will you retire, is the big question on all your fans lips?

"NEVER!"
"As long as there's a breath in me and a bit of guts in the Muzzy, we'll keep on smokin'!"

We hear you have a new project in the works?

"Yeah, I bought another Mustang, I'm going to have a go at the Elite Show scene. I want to build something along the U.S. Pro Street lines, that hasn't been done here yet. I'm hoping to have it ready for Summernats 2005, showing it for the first year and then we'll see what she's made of".

Are there any other influences you credit with your success?

"Yes, I have to give that credit to my wife, Deby. She's always supported me, in every way; she's my best friend. She loves the car as well and is no stranger to a burnout either! I also have 4 kids, all boys; Ivan, Joseph, Joel and Jake. They all help out however they can and it's good to be your kids hero".

Most people that know Gary know he is basically a small town country boy, lover of a good BBQ, Shearer’s singlets and a stubby. Oh, and don't forget the thongs. Not your average superstar, Gary always has time to say G'day to the fans, sign a T-shirt or two, lend a tool to a fellow competitor, or simply sit and have a beer or a Pepsi Max after a show. Many people that don't know Gary are more than surprised at his down to earth attitude and friendly manner.

So, there you have it people, the up to the minute story of Gary Myers and how he got to where he is today. Not only by doing fantastic mind blowing burnouts, but also by being the great guy he is.

This story was written before Gary Competed at Summernats 2004 for the title of Elite Burnout Master, compete he did, and Gary took home the pinnacle of awards. So to his name he now can boast having 7 Summernats Burnout Titles. So now it is time to show every one the new baby to the family “THE SILVER BULLET” Which Gary & Deby have been building for nearly 3 years.

The big question is: DOES IT GO?

Gary answered that by saying, "That’s what I built it for"
